Watercolor and acrylic paintings inspired by the Southwest
The Piedra Lumbre Series — Gallery One
The Piedra Lumbre Series now contains eleven paintings. This series is named for the Piedra Lumbre Land Grant in which I live in northern New Mexico. To my north: red rocks of Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu Lake; south to Cerro Pedernal (the mountain of creative feminine spirits); east to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains; and west up the Chama River Valley past Alta Mesa toward the Monastery of Christ in the Desert.
I started this series to impose geometry and combine texture with my intense colors. Rocks, mesas and mountain forms emerge. The line used to move the eye becomes paths and streams eventually creating a raven's point of view. I imagine swooping and gliding in desert winds and ever-changing light.
These paintings combine watercolors and acrylics on 300# watercolor paper or watercolor board. They are framed in soft burnt sienna rubbed birch shadowbox frames.
